Random House presents the audiobook edition of The Creative Curve, written and read by Allen Gannett. Great ideas take something familiar and make it feel new. We´ve all heard the stories about creative geniuses - the young Mozart who effortlessly overshadows the hardworking Salieri; Paul McCartney coming up with the tune for ´´Yesterday´´ in a dream one morning; J.K. Rowling finding inspiration for Harry Potter sitting on a train to London. What we aren’t told is the real story behind such hits. In fact there is a science and method for mainstream success, whether writing a popular novel, starting a company or creating an effective marketing campaign, and in this book Allen Gannett - data wizard and successful entrepreneur - reveals the four laws of creativity that are proven to work. New ideas are surprising at first and slowly become familiar as we get used to them. Allan Gannett reveals there’s a sweet spot between what feels familiar and safe to us and what is innovative and new: the point of optimal tension between safety and surprise, similarity and difference. The people we think of as creative geniuses are people who understand this sweet spot instinctively; they know what people find familiar and reassuring, and they find ways to reinvent it fresh. Packed with stories and insights ranging from the team behind Dear Evan Hansen to the founder of Reddit, from the Chief Content Officer of Netflix to Michelin starred chefs, The Creative Curve will help you spend less time on ideas destined to fail and more time on ideas that really break out. This audiobook is for everyone, whether you’re a business leader, a creative artist or a budding entrepreneur - and will teach you the secret to conceiving great ideas that can achieve major success. 1. A rollicking look at 1971 - the busiest, most innovative and resonant year of the ´70s, defined by the musical arrival of such stars as David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and Joni Mitchell. On New Year´s Eve, 1970, Paul McCartney told his lawyers to issue the writ at the High Court in London, effectively ending The Beatles. You might say this was the last day of the pop era. The following day, which was a Friday, was 1971. You might say this was the first day of the rock era. And within the remaining 364 days of this monumental year, the world would hear Don McLean´s ´´American Pie´´, The Rolling Stones´ ´´Brown Sugar´´, The Who´s ´´Baba O´Riley´´, Zeppelin´s ´´Stairway to Heaven´´, Rod Stewart´s ´´Maggie May´´, Marvin Gaye´s ´´What´s Going On´´, and more. David Hepworth, an ardent music fan and a well-regarded critic, was 21 in ´71, the same age as many of the legendary artists who arrived on the scene. Taking us on a tour of the major moments, the events and songs of this remarkable year, he shows how musicians came together to form the perfect storm of rock and roll greatness, starting a musical era that would last longer than anyone predicted. Those who joined bands to escape things that lasted found themselves in a new age, its colossal start being part of the genre´s staying power. Never a Dull Moment is more than a love song to the music of 1971. It´s also an homage to the things that inspired art and artists alike. From Soul Train to The Godfather, hot pants to table tennis, Hepworth explores both the music and its landscapes, culminating in an epic story of rock and roll´s best year. 1. Language: English. On 22 February 2006, £53 million was stolen from a cash warehouse belonging to the Securitas company in Tonbridge, Kent. In terms of value, the robbery puts previous British capers, such as the Great Train Robbery, in the shade. This was a crime notable for its audacity, carried out by an unlikely crew of players that included a used car salesman, two Albanian casual workers and a roofer. Five men were convicted at the Old Bailey in January 2008, which attracted nationwide media coverage. A sixth man, Paul Allen, was sentenced in October 2009 for his part. Having become close to the Tonbridge gang and the police during three years of research, Sounes relates a classic crime caper in irresistible, almost forensic detail. After the robbery comes the exciting, sometimes comical story of the getaway. Money is found, and arrests are made, but key characters slip out of the country, and millions of pounds are still missing. Heist is the definitive account of these compelling events, is wildly entertaining and a must for all fans of well-written true crime. Since the book has been written, Darren Aronofsky (director of The Wrestler) has announced he will direct a British-made film. Howard Sounes is known for writing detailed and revelatory biographies of a wide range of extraordinary personalities, including the murderers Fred and Rosemary West (Fred & Rose), the American author Charles Bukowski (Locked in the Arms of a Crazy Life) and the musicians Bob Dylan (Down the Highway) and Paul McCartney (Fab). His new book is Amy, 27 - a study of the life and death of Amy Winehouse and the other iconic stars who died at the same young age. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Howard Sounes.
